Samba Mascott - Mwana Angola (Congo, 1976, Sonafric)

Joseph Samba "Mascott" Mayanguila was a Congolese singer, born the 15 of August 1943 in the country of Loumou (Republic of Congo).

He played in several famous national orchestras such as "Les Bantous de la Capitale" (former musicians from Orchestre TP OK Jazz and Orchestre Rock-a-Mambo) or "Orchestre National du Congo" (read this article for more informations), and also released a few singles and albums by himself.

He died the 10 of April 1991 in Brazzaville, at the age of 48.

I selected for you "Mwana Angola", a deep acoustic track track he released in 1976 on a Congolese compilation destinate to promote the Samay record Edition.

Sebastien Marini - Fatou Bolingo (Congo, 197?, Sonafric)

Sebastien Marini was born on the 20th of January 1950 at Pointe-Noire (Congo-Brazzaville).

During his childhood, he learnt how to play music with the great Cameroonian producer Tino Baroza in Yaounde (Cameroon), then after with Gracia, the former drummer of the great congolese band Ryco-Jazz.

Arrived in Paris in 1969, he decided to travel to the United States in 1970 to try his luck.

Fatou Bolingo, the track presented here, is an interesting funky track with good breaks and solo guitar parts, taken from the only single I know from him !

Orchestre Super Mazembe - Samba (Kenya, 1982, Virgin)

The Orchestre Super Mazembe was a very popular band in Nairobi (Kenya) in the 80's, as known on the Lingala Kenyan scene as Les Mangelepa and Baba Gaston.

The band was formed in Zaire in 1967 by Mutonkole Longwa Didos, and was called "Super Vox" at the time, but changed its name to Orchestra Super Mazembe when the members moved to Nairobi in 1974.

 The members decided to split in 1985, after more than 5 albums and several singles recorded.

Les Cheveux Crepus - Pere Eternel Mette Moin En Haut (Congo, 1960's, Fidsound)

Founded in Brazzaville (Democratic Republic of Congo) in 1960 by Jacques Loubelo, Les Cheveux Crepus was a Christian Afro Folk band composed by Jacques Loubelo, Prosper Nkouri, Kinouani Kazis, Maxime Kibongui, May Yarkos and Bruno Ntelassamou.

The track presented here, "Pere Eternel Mette Moin En Haut" is taken from their first LP - Enjoy !

Orchestre National du Congo - Ah ! Congo (Congo, 1976, Editions Nationales)

L'Orchestre National du Congo was a band from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, founded in 1975 by Sebastien Bikouta.

They recorded this album in 1976, with the help of the Congolese Ministry of Culture.

I decided to make you (re)discover the track "Ah ! Congo", a splendid now classic afro funk track (I really advise you this record, plenty of beautiful tracks !).

Devastating Afrobeat track from this super obscure band who released only this 7inches on a private record label, I have no info on this band, just that they are apparently from Congo.. But what a track !

David Calvet et les Elus (Congo, 1978, Pathé EMI)

 

Nice Afro Latin Fusion track from Congo (Brazzaville), with fresh and fuzzy electric guitars to begin this sunny saturday !

"Les Elus" was a Congolese band, lead by David Calvet Voutoukoulou, a guitarist who recorded 3 albums and who also played with the "Les Ombres de Brazzaville" and "Bayembi" in the early 70's.

Orchestre Les Bakubas (Zaire, 1972, Editions Bakuba)

Some rumors link the band presented here, "L'Orchestre Les Bakubas", with "L'Empire Bakuba", one the most influent soukouss Congolese (Zaire) bands back in the days.

The name of the band refers to the Bakuba Kingdom, in the South East of the modern day Zaire (Democratic Republic of the Congo), and is also called sometimes "Empire Bakuba du Grand Kalle", refering to Joseph Athanase Tchamala Kabasele ("Grand Kalle"), one of the father of the Congolese music that founded the band in 1972.

Unusual for this period, "Requiem", the track presented here, is a very refreshing afro soul track, roughly recorded, sung in Lingala.

Mpongo Love - Ede (Democratic Republic of the Congo, 1976, Editions Toulmonde)

M'pongo Love was one of the most famous Congolese singer, born in 1956 in Boma, DRC (Democratic Republic of the Congo).

She recorded around fifteen albums and many singles, until her death in 1990 in Kinshasa (DRC), mostly Rumbas songs.

The song I decided to make you discover here, "Ede", is taken from her first album, on the very rare Congolese first pressing of this record, out in 1976.

A very cool Soulfull Jerk track, hope you'll like it !
